Borderless contaminated electronica from Msk

Msk, also known as Antonino Musco, is a sicilian multi-instrumentalist who has masterminded a number of interesting projects and soundtracks and is involved in many musical bands such as the Sicilian AV project. As a soloist he plays mostly electro-jazz with various influences, Mediterranean and other. But even as a soloist, as in this new album "am I scared?", he manages to involve musicians not just from Italy but from all over the world. "Am I scared?" is an extremely varied album, as diverse as the author's reference points: from the Japanese hentai Ogenki Clinic to the french poet Jacques Brel; from electronic music to jazz masters like John Coltrane and classics such as Battisti and The Beatles. It is in fact a Beatles song that stands out on a first listening: the audacious and beautifuly executed cover of Eleanor Rigby with the enchanting voice of Claudia Pintaldi (also in Battisti's "Prendila Così"). Sometimes the album slides down more electronic paths, as with the track "Blues for Lidka", that brings to mind the Boards of Canada, or "Les femmes", an interesting jazz-house track with a tribute to the Truffaut movie "The man who loved women". Women. In effect, female vocals are decidedly the strongest point in this album. For example in "Boire tes Baiser", an unexpected chanson francaise, or "Insomnia", an ethereal track that on a first listening would appear to be composed by a theremin when in fact it is the voice of the young Sicilian singer Shirin Demma. Taking into consideration the quality and variety of the album, and obviously the fact that that it's a free download, "am i scared?" is highly recommended for all lovers of borderless contaminated electronica.

Msk, al secolo Antonino Musco, è un polistrumentista siciliano che negli ultimi anni ha sfornato una serie di progetti uno più diverso e interessante dell'altro. Ha messo su e preso parte a collettivi come quello del Sicilian AV Project oltre a comporre colonne sonore e a fare il dj. Da solista si dedica soprattutto all'elettronica macchiata jazz, con influenze varie, mediterranee ma non solo. Ma anche quando si muove da solo, come in questo suo nuovo album riesce a coinvolgere molti altri artisti, italiani e non. "Am i scared?" è un disco estremamente vario, come vari e molteplici sono i riferimenti dell'autore: dai cartoni animati porno giapponesi di Ogenki Clinic (in italia, "La clinica dell'amore"), al poeta francese Jacques Brel, passando per l'elettronica più classica, Battisti, Coltrane e perfino i Beatles. Proprio una cover dei Beatles è uno dei pezzi che si fanno notare già al primo ascolto: l'audace e riuscita cover di Eleaonor Rigby, impreziosita dalla bella voce di Claudia Pintaldi (presente anche in "Prendila così" di Battisti). Il disco è a tratti più elettronico, come il rilassante downtempo di "Blues for Lidka", che ricorda i Boards of Canada, oppure "Les femmes", interessante pezzo con base house, che campiona il film di Truffaut "L'uomo che amava le donne". Le donne, appunto. Le voci femminili sono decisamente il punto di forza dell'album. Ad esempio "Boire tes Baiser", inaspettata chanson francese, o "Insomnia", un pezzo etereo che a un primo ascolto sembra composto con un theremin, mentre si tratta della bellissima voce della siciliana Shirin Demma. Considerata la varietà e la qualità - e ovviamente il fatto che si tratta di un album scaricabile gratuitamente - "Am i scared?" è consigliato a tutti gli amanti dell'elettronica altamente contaminata, senza confini.
